Overview
Spirituality in the workplace is an emerging field of management. The "Spirit at Work" movement is exploring the link between spiritual values and sustainable development. It seeks to promote the recognition of employees as whole human beings and to encourage companies to explore the full range of their needs and desires as a way to stay competitive in the global economy.
Presently, there are two facets of spirituality in the workplace. The first focuses on spirituality as a means of bringing meaning and purpose to the workplace by fostering increased ethical and moral behavior, a sense of caring and community, and more honest and authentic communication. Companies that follow this approach recognize that people need to believe in what they do before fully committing to their work. The bottom line is that people need to connect personal purpose to actual work. To this end, companies are beginning to create safe forums for the exchange of beliefs and ideas to promote spiritual awareness. Spirituality discussion groups are beginning to form in and around workplaces, including the World Bank.
By creating a work environment with a deeper sense of purpose, employees will rise above their daily duties and responsibilities and excel at what they do. Entrusting and empowering employees in this manner will result in more truthful and authentic communication, increased ethical and moral behavior, and increased employee satisfaction and loyalty.
The second facet of spirituality in the workplace recognizes spirituality as a means of fostering employee creativity and encouraging the discovery and manifestation of our inherent genius. In other words, it encourages the Self-actualization of the individual. Companies that follow this approach know that in order to stay competitive in the global market place, they need to operate in the state of continuous innovation and that employee creativity is essential to that process. To stay competitive, companies are creating corporate cultures that encourage employees to use their gifts and talents to their optimum potential in fulfilling their job responsibilities. Some companies are promoting meditation and visualization for this purpose. But, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Spiritual development, the unfolding of one's optimum creative potential, is achieved by having the Body, Mind, and Spirit focused in the highest levels of success. Creating at this level requires a comprehensive guide to the understanding and developing of our spiritual natures. Body, Mind, Spirit Mastery is a program designed to assist individuals and corporations explore the full range of human potential through the complete alignment of Body, Mind, and Spirit.
