Post Partum Overview Post Partum counseling at IM: Center for Integrative Medicine is for women who are experiencing post partum depression following a pregnancy. Post partum symptoms include depression, chronic fatigue, insomnia, lack of confidence, loss of sex drive and passion, muscle and joint pains, unhealthy skin and hair, digestive disturbances, bladder problems, chronic anxiety, heart disease, asthma, and a host of troubling emotions. These symptoms often remain with women even decades after pregnancy. IM's Birthing Process program is designed to help women deal with any unresolved physical, mental, and spiritual issues following a pregnancy and to restore balance and well-being in a women's life.

Body:
The physical process of post partum depression includes changes in hormonal levels during and after pregnancy which may trigger symptoms of postpartum depression. During pregnancy, levels of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone increase greatly. In the first 24 hours after childbirth, hormone levels quickly return to normal. Researchers think the drop in hormone levels may lead to depression. Levels of thyroid hormones also may drop after giving birth. The thyroid is a small gland in the neck that helps regulate how your body uses and stores energy from food. Low levels of thyroid hormones can cause symptoms of depression. A simple blood test can determine if this condition is causing your symptoms. If so, your doctor can prescribe thyroid medicine. Changes in your blood volume, blood pressure, immune system and metabolism can lead to fatigue and mood swings. IM offers complete medical evaluations to determine the cause of post partum depression and to assist women in their recovery from pregnancy in Body, Mind, and Spirit.

Mind:
The mental process of pregnancy and delivery can contribute to post partum depression. New mothers that are sleep-deprived and over-whelmed, may have trouble handling even minor problems. They may be anxious about their ability to care for a newborn. They may feel less attractive and struggle with their sense of identity. In addition, they may feel that they've lost control over their lives. Any of these factors can contribute to postpartum depression. IM's Birthing Process program is dedicated to helping women regain their mental well-being after pregnancy.

Spirit:
The spiritual process of pregnancy and birth as well as lifestyle factors can lead to postpartum depression. IM's Birthing Process program is dedicated to helping you explore and resolve any remaining issues from the birthing process and to help you create the dynamic you want for your new family.
