Acupressure
Acupressure is an ancient healing art using a light touch to press key pressure points which stimulate the body's natural self-healing abilities. When these trigger points are pressed, they release muscular tension, promote circulation of blood, and the body's life force energy stimulating the healing process. Acupuncture and acupressure use the same pressure points and meridians, but acupuncture employs needles, while acupressure uses gentle to firm pressure and integrates body work therapies, therapeutic touch, somatic work, healing imagery, and massage therapy techniques.
Alternative Medicine
Alternative medicine generally refers to practices and treatments used as alternatives to conventional western medicine. An individual, for example, may decide to see a homeopath or naturopath instead of a physician to treat a particular illness or disease.
Body, Mind, Spirit Mastery
The Body, Mind, Spirit Mastery Program, developed by Yolanda Quiroz Soto J.D., is designed to teach individuals, professional/elite athletes, and corporate entities how to master the creative process in Body, Mind, and Spirit. Participants learn how to identify and release obstacles and conditioned limits to their creativity, the cornerstone of personal and professional success. Body, Mind, Spirit techniques are combined with contemporary management thinking, cutting-edge leadership strategies, and state-of-the-art mental training techniques to unleash the participants' inherent genius so they may operate from their fullest creative potential for a life of unlimited organizational and personal success.
Complementary Medicine
Complementary medicine refers to practices and treatments used to supplement conventional western medicine. A cancer patient, for example, may choose to practice meditation for pain management as well as take prescription medication as recommended by a physician.
Conventional Medicine
Conventional medicine refers to medicine as practiced by holders of an M.D. (medical doctor) or D.O. (doctor of osteopathy) degrees and their allied health professionals, such as physical therapists, psychologists, and registered nurses.
Cranio-Sacral Therapy
Cranio-sacral therapy is a non-invasive healing therapy that employs a gentle touch to the body in order to stimulate and interact with the patient's cranio-sacral system. The cranio-sacral system includes all the bones of the skull, face, and mouth extending by a system of hydraulics and membranes to the sacrum, the lower end of the spine. The cranio-sacral system is believed to be the primary physiological system which sustains and distributes the self-healing energies of the body. Several ounces of cranial sacral fluid move rhythmically through a dural membrane nourishing and connecting the entire nervous system. This creates a rhythmical motion throughout the body that can be stimulated for healing. Any imbalance or trauma (i.e. birth trauma, accidents, stress) in this system can affect your senses, emotions, motor functions, structure, and influence the entire system indirectly.
Hands on Healing
Hands on Healing is a healing method which uses a light touch to move or manipulate energy that is blocked or unbalanced in the physical body and that may be manifesting as a discomfort or a disease. Unblocking or releasing the energy is a means to promote health and to restore well-being.
Homeopathy
Homeopathy seeks to stimulate the body's defense mechanisms and processes to prevent or treat illness. Treatment involves giving very small doses of substances called remedies that, according to homeopathy, produce the same or similar symptoms of illness in healthy people if they were given in larger doses. Treatment in homeopathy is individualized to each person. Homeopathic practitioners select remedies according to a total picture of the patient including symptoms, lifestyle, emotional and mental states as well as other factors. Homeopathy can be used to address a range of health concerns, from wellness and prevention to treatment of injuries, diseases, and other conditions.
Integrated Medical and Healing Consultations
IM: Center for Integrative Medicine offers integrated medical and healing consultations by Carl W. Buckhorn, M.D. Dr. Buckhorn approaches healing from a Body, Mind, Spirit perspective. During a consultation, Dr. Buckhorn address a person's physical, mental, and spiritual concerns. He takes a complete physical examination, conducts a complete evaluation of the person, and makes recommendations based on his observations. Each person receives an individually-tailored program to restore balance in Body, Mind, and Spirit. If necessary, laboratory testing and specialty consultation is provided.
Integrative Medicine
Integrative Medicine is more than the integration of mainstream western medicine (allopathic) with complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Integrative Medicine combines the best of conventional medicine with multi-disciplinary therapies to address the needs of the whole person. Integrative Medicine is for people seeking a system that addresses their physical, mental, and spiritual needs. It offers people dealing with a chronic or life-threatening disease an approach that considers all the dimensions of their lives. It also offers those that are not ill the opportunity to increase their self-awareness, enhance their well-being, and prevent health-related problems.
Meditation
The Meditation program at IM: Center for Integrative Medicine is designed to empower patients to become active participants in the healing process. Research shows that Meditation can contribute to an individual's psychological and physiological well-being. This is accomplished because Meditation brings the brainwave pattern into an alpha state, a level of consciousness that promotes healing. Meditation is known to reduce stress, anxiety, anger, and other negative emotions. Increasingly, physicians prescribe meditation as part of the treatment for a large and growing number of medical conditions.
Qigong
Qigong (or ch'i kung) refers to a wide variety of traditional cultivation practices that involve methods of accumulating, circulating, and working with Qi or energy within the body. Qigong involves movement and/or regulated breathing and special methods of focusing on particular energy centers in and around the body are common in the higher level or evolved forms of Qigong. Qigong is practised for health maintenance purposes, as a therapeutic intervention, as a medical profession, a spiritual path and/or component of Chinese martial arts
Reiki
Reiki is spiritually guided life force energy administered by trained practitioners for the promotion of healing. In theory, the Reiki energy is guided by its own wisdom and therefore does not require the direction of the practitioner. The only role of the practitioner is to be the conduit for the Reiki energy to come through to the client. Therefore, the Reiki practitioner does not pick up the "negative" energy from the client or vice versa. For this to be true, however, the practitioner must be completely neutral to the healing process and its outcome thus allowing the Reiki energy to come through in its pure form. In application, being neutral is extremely difficult to do. Most healers want to help their clients get well and become emotionally and otherwise vested in the healing process. They end up picking up the energy of the client and transferring their energy to the client. If the energy is not released, it can manifest as anxiety, depression, discomfort, stress, and even illness or disease. In the client, because there has been an exchange of energy, the same result is possible. In both cases, the goal of Reiki, i.e. healing, is compromised. IM: Center for Integrative Medicine teaches two seminars which review traditional Reiki healing practices and teach time-honored meditation and higher awareness techniques as a supplement to Reiki in order to promote and maintain the purity and integrity of this ancient healing art.
Spiritual Counseling
Spiritual counseling addresses a person's psychological needs from a Body, Mind, Spirit perspective. It recognizes that past traumas manifest in a variety of ways and seeks to bring consciousness and understanding to these experiences in order to release the blocked emotions and tensions from the physical and energy systems to promote balance and healing.
